About Rose

Maureen Lipman stars in Martin Sherman’s Rose, a gripping Jewish drama about one woman’s fight to survive during the 20th and 21st centuries. Rose tickets are available on London Theatre now.

Rose is no ordinary woman. Her life story charts a chaotic European history: she grew up in Ukraine, only to flee Nazi-occupied Warsaw, and escape to the United States to pursue her own American dream. As she seeks a comfortable life, Rose recounts how, regardless of her situation, violence against the weak continues to dominate society.

Rose in London is a pertinent drama to our times. It serves as a moving reminder of the harrowing events that shaped the last century. Septuagenarian Maureen Lipman plays Rose, a role that is, according to the actress “a mystical, magical, deeply philosophical and wildly funny creation."

After performances in Manchester, and at the Park Theatre, the Rose play runs at the Ambassadors Theatre in summer 2023. It’s a chance to see one of Britain’s greatest actresses deliver a tour-de-force performance. The Guardian hailed Lipman's performance as "spellbinding... She’ll crack a joke then watch us quizzically; chasms open behind the twinkle. Tears fall unbidden, barely acknowledged: Rose’s turn is an unsentimental one."

Who is Maureen Lipman?

Dame Maureen Lipman is an Olivier Award-winning actress. Throughout her career, she’s performed as part of Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre Company, as well as leading roles in Oklahoma! at the National Theatre opposite Hugh Jackman, The Best Man at the Playhouse Theatre, and in a Lettice and Lovage revival alongside Felicity Kendal.
